Dental veneers are very thin layers of high grade porcelain which are bonded to the front of your teeth. The porcelain used is very strong, being a mixture of feldspar and quartz minerals making up the bulk of granite.
It has to be refined to remove any impurities until it is highly translucent and looks exactly like natural teeth. A skilled technician then crafts the porcelain veneers to look exactly as you want your new teeth to look.
The final product is a thin shell which which fits precisely over the prepared tooth to restore its shape, colour and alignment.
The cost of teeth veneers varies between dental practices which can be down to:
Before deciding which dentist to choose for your dental veneers we recommend asking to see previous before and after cases. Also read testimonials of satisfied and happy patients.
This is an excellent way to know if you are at the best practice for dental veneers.

One of the best ways to examine the quality of dental veneers made by any dentist is to take a look at before and after cases. Showing photographs of dental veneers before and after gives you an indication of the type of problem that dental veneers can solve.
A question that many people ask is should I have dental veneers or dental crowns? Here is a simple list which may help you understand the difference between these two treatment:
Dental veneers require minimum preparation of the tooth, sometimes more aggressive preparation of the underlying tooth is required due to either the desired result or the amount of dental decay which must be removed. There is a point at which the amount of tooth that has been removed necessitates the use of a dental crown.
Dental crowns can often be used to support and retain dentures using attachments. Dental veneers cannot take on this role, so if you have a denture next to a tooth which needs to be restored then you may find a dental crown is the best option.
If a dental veneer is being used to restore the colour of the tooth (particularly if teeth whitening would not whiten the tooth enough) and the underlying tooth is exceptionally dark due to revitalisation then because of veneer is a thin covering, typically less than 1 mm, it may be to translucent and the underlying dark tooth may shine through. In this case a dental crown may be a better option.
If the change to the underlying tooth is fairly minimal with regards to correction of shape, position and colour then a dental veneer may be the best option as it is minimally invasive and retains as much natural tooth structure as possible.
As you can see, the decision about whether to have a dental veneer or dental crown is reasonably complex, the best way to find out which one to have is to have a consultation with your dentist, discuss your concerns and desired outcomes in order to work out the best treatment.
No. The material (porcelain) that veneers are made from is exceptionally durable and will not pick up staining, however, it’s important to note that your natural teeth will pick up staining from smoking, tea, coffee, red wine and intensely coloured food.
Sometimes it might look as though the veneer has stained but it is actually the tooth surrounding the veneer which has discoloured, rather than the porcelain veneer itself.
The biggest benefit of a dental veneer is that it is a minimally invasive approach to cosmetic dentistry. This means that generally speaking a dental veneer retains more healthy tooth tissue than other forms of restorative cosmetic work such as dental crowns.
